Depression is more than just feeling down – it's a serious condition that affects your physical and mental health.

When you are depressed, you feel hopeless and dissatisfied. It can leave you feeling empty, listless, worn out by disappointment and a longing for joy and happiness that you don't seem to be able to make happen.

And ironically it can feel like nothing you do seems to help, or at least not for long.

Male depression is a very different cluster of behaviours. It is not very well known in the general community and is often missed. It has 4 patterns of behaviour: discontent with your elf, antagonism and blaming others, exaggerated behaviour, and avoidance and escape.

Post Natal depression is also a very common form of depression for women after giving birth, particularly after the first baby.

If you are suffering from Bipolar Disorder, you may find yourself moving quickly from feeling very high into depression.

When you are suffering from any kind of depression, it’s all too easy to give up doing anything that feels leisurely and fun, and that usually furthers your decline into lethargy and the black hole.

But the news is good. Depression has been shown by research to be very easily treatable with often as high as a 90% success rate with psychotherapy.

Anxiety can be just as debilitating in its own way. If you find that you’re feeling tense, edgy and restless a lot of the time, you may be suffering from Generalised Anxiety. With today's pace of life, anxiety is often a natural consequence of our built-up stress.

Or perhaps you are feeling panic attacks in your everyday life or in particular circumstances. These are very unpleasant and make you want to retreat from life. (Click here for more on Panic Attacks & Panic Disorders)

Or maybe you find yourself obsessing over little things and acting compulsively as a result. (click here for more on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)

You may also feel that you are still affected by a painful or traumatic event that happened in the past, and find that you avoid this kind of situation.

No matter what form your anxiety takes, you can feel powerless to direct what is happening, which can make you even more anxious.

But the news is positive. We have an ever increasing research knowledge about the causes of anxiety and how we can successfully treat it with a minimum amount of therapeutic time.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Exciting news in Treating Anxiety and Depression

In recent years there has been a huge amount of research in neuroscience with exciting new discoveries into what is happening in the brain when you are experiencing depression and anxiety and why you are suffering in these ways. This enables us to create wonderful new methodologies for helping you overcome these problems. The newer methodologies of Mindfulness and Compassionate Therapy are showing extremely positive results.

So you do not have to continue to suffer. We now have very powerful and proven methods for helping you overcome anxiety, stress and depression that don’t have you relying solely on medication.

  • Why come to us for help with your Anxiety and Depression?

Our Psychologists have from 5 to 20 years experience working in these areas. We deliver In-House training with world experts throughout the year, ensuring that we have and share the best of resources and are constantly keeping up to date with current research in these specialist fields.

We also choose our Psychologists on the basis of their warm, caring and non-judgemental approach. We care about you, your progress and creating meaningful and lasting change for you, while doing so in a minimum number of sessions.

We also welcome and ask for your feedback as we are constantly monitoring our results with you, ensuring you are happy with your progress.

And as we are all Psychologists, you can be sure that we practice in accordance with the professional and ethical codes of conduct outlined by the Psychology Board of Australia and the APS, so you are in safe hands.

You will probably also be eligible for Medicare or Private Health Insurance Rebates.

Private Health Insurance Rebates apply, and Medicare Rebates may apply.

  • What factor creates the best therapeutic help for you?

Time and time again, research has shown that the therapist/client relationship, or therapeutic alliance, as we call it, is the most important factor in successful therapy.

So feeling that your Psychologist is a good “fit” for you, seeks to understand you, shows empathy for you and provides you with helpful insight into your particular problems is very important.

If for some reason we have booked you in with one of our Psychologists that you don’t have this level of comfort and fit with, please ring our office and we will endeavour to find a more suitable Psychologist for you.

This rarely happens at the Hart Centre, but we want to make sure that you are happy with the assistance you are receiving as this “fit” is more important for your progress than any particular therapy your Psychologist may be using.

  • What to Expect on Your First Appointment

Your first appointment can feel daunting if you haven’t been to see a Psychologist before. Please be assured that we will make you feel at home as we are here to genuinely help you. Our therapeutic alliance with you is very important to us.

We will use this initial session to gain a good understanding of your particular situation and symptoms, to assist in a diagnosis and a deeper insight into the way you are feeling.
Then we will give you a plan for your treatment and how you might progress over the following weeks. You will also leave with some beginning strategies to start your therapy straight away.
We look forward to helping you become happier, more centred in your own being, and more fulfilled in your life.

Please phone our friendly receptionists on 1300830552 to enquire or book.

  • What treatment Modalities do we use as Psychologists?

  • How effective is Skype counselling? Can it really help me?

Skype counselling is effective, confidential and convenient. No referrals are required for our Skype service – you can commence counselling immediately.

One of the major benefits of Skype counselling is that it’s a visual medium. Live video counselling enables you and your counsellor to speak with and see each other throughout your session, similar to in person counselling.

Fortunately, there have been advancements in the online and Skype counselling rebates available from Medicare, which you will be able to access through a Mental Health Care Plan from November 2017. Rebates available are between $84.80 and $125.50 for each session, for up to 10 sessions. Find out more about rebates here.
